Black Syracuse Finance Professor, CNN Analyst Dr. Boyce Watkins Launches Major Study on Black Wealth, Black Money and Investing
Syracuse, NY (PRWEB) April 15, 2008 -- Prominent Black Finance Professor Dr. Boyce Watkins has launched the largest study in black wealth and investing in recent history. In conjunction with The Black Financial Economists Association and YourBlackMoney.com, Dr. Watkins has begun the data analysis for a study on the spending, saving, investing and borrowing habits of African-Americans.
Dr. Watkins, a regular analyst with CNN, CBS, ESPN and BET, is the most highly recognized authority on black savings and investing. He has been a Fellow with The Center for European Economic Research and the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He is also the first African-American Finance Professor in the 130-year history of Syracuse University.
The study is designed to determine how African-Americans think about money. The wealth disparity in black communities is well-documented, resulting from a 400 year legacy of wealth exclusion for African-American families. Dr. Watkins argues that this study will help solve problems and provide clues regarding how black families can take the next step toward financial prosperity.
"A 400 year legacy of poverty has a tremendous impact on how you think about money, investing and spending," says Dr. Watkins, who has given financial advice to Essence Magazine, Black Enterprise and BET. "My goal is to dig to the root of the problem and figure out how black people think about money and how money plays a role in their life choices."
Dr. Watkins expects the study to result in a series of 5 research papers that he plans to publish in academic journals. He also plans to write a book based on the results of the study that will be shared with the non-academic community.
"I feel it is important for this research to leave the Ivory Tower," says Dr. Watkins, who was the only African-American in the world to earn a PhD in Finance during the year 2002. "Financial achievement and understanding is the next step in the Civil Rights Movement."
